Filming a backyard or at-home country wedding

Some of the most personal weddings I film are not at a venue at all. They are in a family's backyard, on the home farm, or on a piece of land that means something to the couple. Out in the country, an at-home wedding is a beautiful choice, and it films wonderfully. Here is what makes them special, and what to think about.
Why an at-home wedding films so well
There is a warmth to a wedding held at home that you cannot fake. The place already means something, the people are relaxed, and the whole day feels less like an event and more like the best kind of family gathering. That is exactly the feeling a documentary style is built to capture, the real, unforced moments.
What to plan for
Because a backyard is not built for weddings the way a venue is, a little planning goes a long way:
- Light after dark. Once the sun goes down, an open yard gets dark fast. String lights or a lit tent keep the evening looking beautiful on camera.
- Power. Make sure there is power nearby for lights, music, and the little things. A generator is common for more remote properties.
- Sound. Open air swallows sound, so good microphones for your vows and speeches really matter here.
- Flow. Think about where the ceremony, dinner, and dancing will happen, so the day moves easily.
None of this is hard, and it is exactly the kind of thing I will happily talk through with you. If you are dreaming of a wedding on your own land, I would love to help you capture it.
