Do you need both a videographer and a photographer?

It is one of the first questions couples ask: do you really need both a videographer and a photographer? They overlap, neither is cheap, and it can feel like you are paying twice for the same thing. Here is an honest take from someone who films weddings for a living, and yes, I will try to be fair to the photographers.

They capture two different things

A photo freezes a moment. It is the frame you print, hang on the wall, and set on the mantel. A film captures what a photo cannot: motion and sound. Your partner's voice catching during the vows. The actual speech, not a still of someone holding a microphone. The way the room felt when everyone got up to dance.

The simplest way I can put it: photos are how you remember what your wedding looked like. Film is how you remember how it felt.

The case for having both

Most couples who can manage it are happiest with both, because they do genuinely different jobs. You will reach for the photos often, they are quick to share and easy to print. But the film is the one that tends to undo people years later, because it brings back the sound of the day. They are not competing. They are two halves of the same memory.

If your budget only stretches to one

Be honest with yourself about what you will actually want in ten years. If you love prints, wall art, and quick shares, photography may matter more to you. If the thought of hearing your vows again, or a grandparent's toast, means more than a printed frame, put your money toward film. There is no universal right answer here, only what you personally will treasure.

How we work together on the day

A good videographer and photographer stay out of each other's way. On a wedding day I hang back, let the photographer lead the posed moments, and quietly capture the real ones as they happen. You should never feel like two crews are competing over you. If anything, we make each other's work better.
